My formative years were spent in the 80's with foundational bands like New Order, Depeche Mode, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Cure, and Jane's Addiction. Even though the 80's was the pioneer decade for the alternative genre, this music transcended into the 90's and to some cool tunes today which could be classified as alternative. Hopefully, this site will bring back some good memories and introduce some things you haven't heard before.

Feedback and suggestions are welcome.

Enjoy.

'In a Lonely Place' by New Order

And on the 8th day God created music and this is the 1st song to rain down from Heaven . . .

'Cries and Whispers' by New Order

Album: Substance
Released: 1987
Theme: quintessential 80's

So it would be appropriate to post 'Cries and Whispers' based on what I said yesterday? And it is one of many songs that features the distinctive talent of Peter Hook's bass playing.

Don't know how to explain this one other than dark and mysterious. There's something else about it that I can't put my finger on.

'Procession' by New Order

Album: Substance
Released: 1987
Theme: quintessential 80's

'Procession' and 'Cries and Whispers' are back to back on Substance Disc 2 which carries a little more mystique than Disc 1. In my opinion, this is one of the best combinations on any album ('Exploding Boy' and 'A Few Hours After This' off The Cures' Standing on a Beach is up there as well).

'Procession' is very cool.

'True Faith' by New Order

Album: Substance
Released: 1987
Theme: quintessential 80's

Back to our Foundation. Good song but it brings back bad memories of my one and only line dance performance.

Cool video though.

'Shell Shock' by New Order

Album: Substance
Released: 1987
Theme: magical 80's

The song was actually released as a single in 1986 and appeared in the movie Pretty in Pink. And although I don't have the factual confirmation, it seems was the most commercially successful in the States.

Substance is a 2 disc compilation album which I would rank as an absolute must have.

'Vanishing Point' by New Order

Album: Technique
Released: 1989
Theme: magical 80's

It's about time for some New Order on SoDA . . . Interestingly enough, the album was partly recorded in Ibiza, Spain - a hedonistic, club oriented island off the coast of Spain. This is fitting since I like so many of the tracks on it.

This is a classy, great song and is dedicated to James.
