My formative years were spent in the 80's with foundational bands like New Order, Depeche Mode, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Cure, and Jane's Addiction. Even though the 80's was the pioneer decade for the alternative genre, this music transcended into the 90's and to some cool tunes today which could be classified as alternative. Hopefully, this site will bring back some good memories and introduce some things you haven't heard before.

Feedback and suggestions are welcome.

Enjoy.

'Next Girl' by The Black Keys

Album: Brothers

Released: 2010
Theme: alternative funk

Hmmm - what to post on NYEve?? The Black Keys from OH will work.

While listening to TBK, I either want to be in this video or in a dive bar smoking a cigar and drinking whiskey.

'Come In Please' by Edward Sharpe

Album: Up from Below

Released: 1992
Theme: alternative folk funk

I don't know what it is about this deeper cut that instantly attracted me. That doesn't happen often, and I crave things that do.

Like some other of my posts, this tune can take you on a ride if you let it.

'Magnificient' by U2

Album: No Line on the Horizon

Released: 2009
Theme: alternative rock

It's time for some more U2. I've posted them before but I don't think I mentioned that they were my favorite band in high school - was even a member of the fan club.

Anyway, this tune has a special feel; there's nothing not to like.

'Doctor! Doctor!' by Thompson Twins

Album: Into the Gap

Released: 1986
Theme: quintessential 80's

This song is the 1st track off their 4th studio album and possess all the Thompson Twin power.

Was making dinner one night and the song came to me; pregnant with the idea of posting.

'Everywhere I Go' by The Call

Album: Reconciled

Released: 1986
Theme: alternative rock

First thing to say is that lead singer Michael Been's voice is 2nd to only Ian McCulloch of Echo in my music world. Unfortunately, Been died on August 19, 2010 from a heart attack.

The Call was very much a part of the magical 80's for me and this tune is central. They have 2 other great songs which will eventually be posted but enjoy this one for now.
