My formative years were spent in the 80's with foundational bands like New Order, Depeche Mode, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Cure, and Jane's Addiction. Even though the 80's was the pioneer decade for the alternative genre, this music transcended into the 90's and to some cool tunes today which could be classified as alternative. Hopefully, this site will bring back some good memories and introduce some things you haven't heard before.

Feedback and suggestions are welcome.

Enjoy.

'Vanishing Point' by New Order

Album: Technique
Released: 1989
Theme: magical 80's

It's about time for some New Order on SoDA . . . Interestingly enough, the album was partly recorded in Ibiza, Spain - a hedonistic, club oriented island off the coast of Spain. This is fitting since I like so many of the tracks on it.

This is a classy, great song and is dedicated to James.

'Intergalactic' by Beastie Boys

Album: Hello Nasty
Released: 1998
Theme: alternative funk

There 5th studio album is a gem. It's got a ton of songs and most kick ass.

'Intergalactic' was probably the most played on the radio.

Enjoy the video on YouTube.

'Bull in the Heather' by Sonic Youth

Album: Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star
Released: 1994
Theme: alternative post punk funk

I don't know a lot about Sonic Youth but they produced a lot of stuff - 16 studio albums and counting.

This song is seductive and different and that's all that needs to be said.

'Pop Goes the World' by Men Without Hats

Album: Pop Goes the World
Released: 1981
Theme: quintessential 80's

This is the band's 3rd studio album and I'm a big fan of the song, probably more so than 'Safety Dance'. In the end, they're both good and both SoDA worthy.

I don't anticipate posting anything else by Men Without Hats - let me know if I need to spanked and corrected.

'So What'cha Want' by Beastie Boys

Album: Check Your Head

Theme: alternative funk

What's taken me so long to post the Boys??

This song has all the right stuff - big beat, attitude, and smooth rhythm. Let's rock.
