My formative years were spent in the 80's with foundational bands like New Order, Depeche Mode, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Cure, and Jane's Addiction. Even though the 80's was the pioneer decade for the alternative genre, this music transcended into the 90's and to some cool tunes today which could be classified as alternative. Hopefully, this site will bring back some good memories and introduce some things you haven't heard before.

Feedback and suggestions are welcome.

Enjoy.

'Jubilation' by Anything Box

Album: Peace
Released: 1990
Theme: alternative pop

I was surprised to learn that most of the music by Anything Box was produced in the 90's because it has so much of an 80's sound. This track captures some of the magic of alternative music. The attached video isn't really a video but at least there's sound.

'New Year's Day' by U2

Album: War
Released: 1983
Theme: quintessential 80's

An obviously appropriate song posting for today, although, you'll find it to be more main stream than most of the posts going forward. I would classify earlier stuff by U2 as more alternative which will be unveiled in good time.

'Probably a Robbery' by Renegade Soundwave

Album: Soundclash

Released: 1989
Theme: club

Not the most popular song by this band but it will give you an idea for the sound. RSW has big beat - should be listened to loud and is great party music. I would love to see live but probably will never get to and that's probably a robbery. Have a safe night.

'Primary' by The Cure

Album: Faith
Released: 1981
Theme: quintessential 80's

'Primary' is one of my favorites by The Cure and it's as good as any to debut this band on SoDA. I was introduced to the tune from a singles compilation called Standing on a Beach or Staring at the Sea (CD format) released in 1986 and should be primary album in your 80's collection.

This song shows the intense side of The Cure.

'Hit the Heartbrakes' by The Black Kids

Album: Partie Traumatic
Released: 2008
Theme: alternative pop

This is a new band out of Jacksonville, FL which has been featured on the late night talk shows recently. This track has a surreal quality and I like that. Check out the album and look out for a new one soon.
