My formative years were spent in the 80's with foundational bands like New Order, Depeche Mode, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Cure, and Jane's Addiction. Even though the 80's was the pioneer decade for the alternative genre, this music transcended into the 90's and to some cool tunes today which could be classified as alternative. Hopefully, this site will bring back some good memories and introduce some things you haven't heard before.

Feedback and suggestions are welcome.

Enjoy.

'New Year's Day' by U2

Album: War
Released: 1983
Theme: quintessential 80's

An obviously appropriate song posting for today, although, you'll find it to be more main stream than most of the posts going forward. I would classify earlier stuff by U2 as more alternative which will be unveiled in good time.

  1. Great choice -> U2 War is most certainly SoDA worthy!! U2 helped set the stage for later alternative rock. I look forward to seeing more U2 on SoDA.

This leads into one of my pet peeves about so-called "Alternative" music. U2 is a great band that has been making great (albeit not perfect) music for decades. IMHO Moment of Surrender and Unknown Caller (from their last album) rank up there with their best songs from the early days. Yet, there seems to be an unspoken understanding among alterna-files that any band appreciated by the masses is, by definition, a sellout making inferior music. Do alterna-files have some corner on musical appreciation? I think not!!
    Ok, now I'll shut up.....
