My formative years were spent in the 80's with foundational bands like New Order, Depeche Mode, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Cure, and Jane's Addiction. Even though the 80's was the pioneer decade for the alternative genre, this music transcended into the 90's and to some cool tunes today which could be classified as alternative. Hopefully, this site will bring back some good memories and introduce some things you haven't heard before.

Feedback and suggestions are welcome.

Enjoy.

Theme: quintessential 80's

The band, led by the famous Marc Almond, is known for another song which will almost definitely be posted later.

However, this track is totally groovy so enjoy something you might not have heard before.

'West End Girls' by Pet Shop Boys

Album: Please
Released: 1986
Theme: quintessential 80's

Aahh, a classic off the band's first studio album that made it to the top of music charts in the UK & US.

The song reminds me of a surreal spring break in Hilton Head, SC during my junior year of high school. I can smell the ocean and sand and oil and . . .

'Orgasm' by Porno for Pyros

Album: Porno for Pyros
Released: 1993
Theme: alternative rock

Following the demise of the one and only Jane's Addiction, frontman Perry Farrell and drummer Stephen Perkins formed Porno for Pyros.

I've seen the band live and it's a slightly more enigmatic show than Jane's. This tune isn't their most popular, but I really like the seductive sound and wanted give you something a little different.

'Always on My Mind' by Pet Shop Boys

Album: Introspective
Released: 1988
Theme: quintessential 80's

To me, Pet Shop Boys are on the same wavelength as ABC but think PSB are slightly more classy. I think this song, off the band's 4th studio album, embodies that statement.

As information, PSB have sold over 100 million records worldwide and could be the most successful duo in pop music history.

'That Was Then but This Is Now' by ABC

Album: Beauty Stab
Released: 1983
Theme: quintessential 80's

'That Was Then but This Is Now' was the first single off the band's 2nd studio album.

The song starts out with a very typical 80's sound but then progressively gets more mysterious. I don't know how to describe it - kinda of similar to thinking you know someone but then find out there's a lot of cool stuff you didn't know. I like that.
