My formative years were spent in the 80's with foundational bands like New Order, Depeche Mode, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Cure, and Jane's Addiction. Even though the 80's was the pioneer decade for the alternative genre, this music transcended into the 90's and to some cool tunes today which could be classified as alternative. Hopefully, this site will bring back some good memories and introduce some things you haven't heard before.

Feedback and suggestions are welcome.

Enjoy.

'Ocean Size' by Jane's Addiction

Album: Nothing Shocking

Released: 1988
Theme: alternative rock

This tune seems to announce Jane's Addiction to the world on their debut studio album. I think it captures Jane's power. If I were boxer, this would be played during my walk to the ring.

'Yin and Yang (The Flowerpot Man)' by Love and Rockets

Album: Express
Released: 1986
Theme: deep alternative

A fitting song for today since it's what the train engineer listens to as the Polar Express chugs along the snowy tundra on the way to North Pole town. Feel the rhythm . . .

'It's My Life' by Talk Talk

Album: It's My Life
Released: 1984
Theme: dreamy

I hear this song and think of dancing at Club Park Avenue in Tallahassee, FL - early in the night before things get hoppin'; kind of surreal and romantic.

'Fine Time' by New Order

Album: Technique
Released: 1989
Theme: dance

New Order is a core band if not The core band of alternative 80's. I would be remiss if I didn't include in the 1st week. 'Fine Time' isn't classic New Order but rather more enigmatic.

'Sea Legs' by The Shins

Album: Wincing the Night Away
Released: 2007
Theme: dreamy

This relatively new song reminds me of Ocean Blue which has the ability to take you away to another world. Alternative is alive and kicking . . .
