My formative years were spent in the 80's with foundational bands like New Order, Depeche Mode, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Cure, and Jane's Addiction. Even though the 80's was the pioneer decade for the alternative genre, this music transcended into the 90's and to some cool tunes today which could be classified as alternative. Hopefully, this site will bring back some good memories and introduce some things you haven't heard before.

Feedback and suggestions are welcome.

Enjoy.

'My Heart Goes Bang' by Dead or Alive

Now this one is quintessential Dead or Alive. Maybe I'm a dork but I think this one makes me want to shake it, baby!

'Cries and Whispers' by New Order

Album: Substance
Released: 1987
Theme: quintessential 80's

So it would be appropriate to post 'Cries and Whispers' based on what I said yesterday? And it is one of many songs that features the distinctive talent of Peter Hook's bass playing.

Don't know how to explain this one other than dark and mysterious. There's something else about it that I can't put my finger on.

'Procession' by New Order

Album: Substance
Released: 1987
Theme: quintessential 80's

'Procession' and 'Cries and Whispers' are back to back on Substance Disc 2 which carries a little more mystique than Disc 1. In my opinion, this is one of the best combinations on any album ('Exploding Boy' and 'A Few Hours After This' off The Cures' Standing on a Beach is up there as well).

'Procession' is very cool.

'Alfie' by Lily Allen

Album: Alright, Still
Released: 2006
Theme: fresh

Lily has a younger brother named Alfie Owen-Allen, and evidently, this song was written with him in mind. If I'm Alfie, not sure it's a great song . . .

This one has catchy, little beat that's kinda interesting.

Watch on YouTube.
